Throughout the years Dan Castle (he judged white card/APA Semi)
has judged our children's birds numerous times, but I have never had the privilege of him judging any of mine. We have a huge respect for him, and he has mentored Jenna throughout her youth years with her Brahmas. Dan took a moment to share his judging of the Silkie classes, and how he goes about it. I have shown many other species of livestock and most of what I have shown you get reasons given out loud on a mic to the competitors and audience. You don't get that in exhibition poultry so this was a special treat!!! Poultry judges welcome questions after they are finished with the class normally. One thing he said that I took as a HUGE chunk of how I will build my White Silkie program -
He said when he starts a class, he goes into "cull mode". Weeding out the birds who's breeders didn't do their homework! Things like light colored eyes, poor wings for example.
That is a bit of info that I will take with me from now on!! I was honored to have my White pullet make Reserve Featherleg! A Black Cochin was Champion.
