The number one concern when temperatures dip into dangerous digits is the freezing of water pipes, especially those on exterior walls, in basements, attics, garages and crawl spaces.
Here are a few things you can do to help protect your home during dangerous cold.

~ Keep your thermostat at a continuous setting, with a minimum of 68°F. Be sure to have a clean filter.
~ Turn on your faucets (hot and cold) to a slow trickle.
~ Open any under-sink cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
~ Wrap exposed water pipes with pipe insulation (it’s very inexpensive & you can find it at Home Depot, Ace, etc.)
~ Disconnect garden hoses and shut off exterior water lines when possible.
~ Locate where your main water shut off is, in the event of a burst pipe.
~Make sure exterior venting is clear of snow and ice so carbon dioxide does not accumulate inside.
~ If you will be away for an extended period, have someone check your home periodically.

To increase your comfort…seal drafts around windows and doors (towels work well). Use space heaters cautiously. Dress in layers- fabric made of natural fibers (wool, silk, cotton) work well to insulate and allow your body to breathe.
