The Black-billed Magpie is one of the most conspicuous birds on the Front Range. It's big, it's loud, it travels in ravenous flocks that gobble up your suet and bird seed. It's also beautiful with its long tail and blue wings, and smart. I've witnessed them picking dead bugs from a parked car's grill and ticks from the backs of mule deer. Love them or hate them, they're fascinating birds that are a symbol of the West.

In honor of Independence Day and the US's 250th birthday, let's look at some red, white, and blue birds!

The Crimson-breasted Gonolek or Shrike, of South Africa has a white stripe on the wing that resembles the stripes on the American flag.

The national bird of Cuba, the Cuban Trogon, mimics the colors of the Cuban flag, which are red, white, and blue just like the American flag.

The Surucua Trogon has several differently-colored subspecies, including the red-bellied version in Brazil that mimics the American flag.
