Rental clubs may not always be the first thing on the checklist—but they can quickly become a problem if you’re not prepared. I learned that lesson firsthand years ago while working in the pro shop at Windwood Golf Club in Watertown, Wisconsin.

On my first day, a golfer checking in for his tee time asked if he could rent a set of clubs. I told one of the staff members to grab a rental set.
He looked at me and said, “You mean from the lost and found department?” I thought he was joking. But when he came back with the bag, I understood exactly what he meant.

Inside was a collection of mismatched clubs—different brands, different shafts, and different generations of equipment. It was exactly what it looked like: years of forgotten clubs pressed into service as a “rental set.” It was embarrassing.

Ironically, years later when I started Golf Club Rental Express, I discovered that a lot of golf courses still have what could best be described as a “lost and found rental department.” That’s exactly the problem we set out to solve.
