As you may know, priests go to seminary to learn about God and the Church. Professional theologians go to school even longer, earning a doctorate in the subject. But in today's Gospel, is Jesus dissing those growing in wisdom? Is he saying all that learning is a waste?

Not quite. Instead, Jesus is making a different point: that no amount of intellectual acumen or worldly wisdom can lead one to salvation. In fact, only those who are "little," who do not think of themselves as great, self-sufficient, and possessing all the answers, are capable of receiving the true knowledge that Christ wants to offer. Just as an empty glass can be filled up, so too are the humble and lowly better able to receive from God.

In fact, some of the greatest minds in the Church, like St. Thomas Aquinas, were characterized by this kind of intellectual humility. And no matter how bright each of us is, there's a lesson in here for all of us at undefined. Let's ponder it this Sunday.
