How to Avoid the Body Shop After Prom Night and/or Graduation Night

As excited as your child is for prom night and/or graduations, you might feel anxious. This is perfectly understandable. Although these nights allow them to celebrate their hard work at school and make memories with their friends, it also presents opportunities for trouble or even injury. If you want your teen to enjoy their special days and avoid a trip to the body shop, consider the following tips.

1. Set Rules for the Car

Whether your child is borrowing your vehicle or taking their own, don’t hesitate to set boundaries on their vehicle usage. For example, by limiting the number of people allowed in the car at one time, you can help your child avoid accidents caused by distracted driving. This will keep your child safe and help avoid a trip to the body shop. Be firm with your teen when forbidding them to allow anyone else to get in the driver’s seat. While you may trust your child, you can’t speak for other teens, and neither can your insurance policy.

2. Establish a Curfew

Although your teen might deserve some time to let loose and take it easy, driving home too late could lead to accidents caused by fatigue. Since they’ll spend most of the evening dancing and socializing, remind your child how their energy levels could affect their judgment and reaction time on the road. While a curfew extension is reasonable for prom night and graduation night, make sure to set an exact time that your teen should be back home. That way, you’ll know when to expect them, and they can mentally prepare for the end of their night.

3. Talk About Drinking

It may not be the easiest conversation to have with your teen, but drinking on prom night and/or graduation night is more of a threat to their safety than anything else. Instead of stressing the dangers of alcohol in general to your child, speak with them candidly about the deadly relationship between drinking and driving. Explain that while some teens may experiment with substances without telling their parents, their safety behind the wheel is your utmost priority. Remind them that while damage to the car can be fixed at a body shop, some injuries can have far more serious consequences. If they plan to drive to prom and back, consuming alcohol or drugs could endanger themselves and their friends on this special night.
