As much as we try to control our horses, ultimately they control themselves, and all we can do is be in total control of ourselves in order to alter the behavior of our horses. This point is illustrated by a conversation between Sandra Bullock and Viggo Mortensen in the movie 28 Days, where they are both at a rehab center. Viggo plays a professional baseball player who is practicing his pitching in the woods behind the rehab center, when Sandra comes up to him and asks him how to hit the X he has spray painted on a matress leaning up against a tree some 40 yards away. Viggo then says "You don't control the black X, you do however have control over how you holds the ball in your hand, how you pivot your hips, how you point your hand, and when you release the ball. The big black X is none of your business." The horse is the world's hairiest big black X.
