𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸?
Boondocking refers to camping without access to electric, water, or sewage hook-ups, allowing the adventurous to travel routes and reach destinations that wouldn’t be possible with more conventional camping. It’s also a good layover option during long trips when you need somewhere to sleep for a few hours, allowing you to pull over in a safe place, even a truck stop or empty parking lot. Other types of travel don’t give you that kind of freedom!

Boondocking doesn’t just increase your travel opportunities, it’s also a great way to save money on campsite fees, gas, and hotel reservations. Plus, just a little bit of planning, like bringing an external generator, solar panels, composting toilet, portable shower, and cooking equipment, makes the entire experience more comfortable.

𝗥𝗩 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴
You can boondock in an RV in many different ways, including camping on public lands or staying overnight in a business parking lot. When campers talk about boondocking, they’re mostly referring to camping in national forests or on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land (also referred to as wild, primitive, or dispersed camping). Instagram-worthy views are practically guaranteed with this type of boondocking!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗩 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴?
Small to medium-sized trailers are most popular among full-time boondockers, with bumper-pull trailers and smaller fifth-wheel trailers tending to be most sought after. Boondockers generally want manageable trailers that can make tight turns, tow on steep grades, and drive through soft sand. Smaller trailers tend to be easier to work on because there are no engines or drive trains to maintain.

For those who love the outdoors but want some of the amenities of home, a small camper could be the perfect choice. They're more comfortable than sleeping in a tent and easier to set up than a large RV. And because they weigh so little, they're easy to maneuver into remote sites and can be towed by most hitched vehicles.
