The Declaration of Independence only became necessary when the king infringed on the people’s freedom, threatening the faith and families they fled England to protect. Our Founding Fathers all understood the importance of faith, family, and freedom. Jefferson believed freedom is only secured when rooted in a Creator and he saw one of the keys to happiness as family. Adams understood the Constitution to only be for a moral and religious people and that these are taught in the family. Washington believed religion is essential to political prosperity and that true happiness is found in marriage and family. All three of them fought for our freedom as Americans.

As we reflect on 250 years of America, we should thank God that all three of these things have flourished. However, we have to remember that they don’t just happen, they are maintained. If we want America to still be a nation where faith, family, and freedom flourish for 250 more years we must cultivate these things. We must form families rooted in faith that fight to maintain our freedom. To do so isn’t just beneficial. It’s essential to what it means to be an American.

Happy Independence Day from the Family Foundation!

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!” – Psalm 33:12

Tomorrow marks a significant milestone for the United States of America, as we Americans celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday. Independence Day is celebrated across America as a time to show gratitude to God for the birth of our great nation. A nation defined by freedom.

The Declaration of Independence, which was used to declare independence from Great Britain, was signed by the new government of the United States in 1776, 250 years ago. Thomas Jefferson primarily authored the Declaration of Independence, and in the document, he explained with great clarity the reasons why the United States was seeking independence from Great Britain.

As we celebrate America’s existence for a quarter-millennium, let us thank God for all that America has accomplished in a relatively short period of time. We have become the most innovative, free, and prosperous nation on earth. Let us also look forward with great optimism to the next 250 years and beyond. If we truly remain “One Nation Under God,” God will continue to shower His blessings on us as a collective nation.

The Bible teaches that if a nation obeys the commands of God’s Word, then God will bless that nation. If a nation disobeys and neglects the commands of God’s Word, then God will withhold His blessings from that nation. This is why the Psalmist clearly articulates “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD” (Psalm 33:12). The Hebrew word, “blessed” that is used in Psalm 33:12, can also be translated as “happy.” The idea here is that the nation whose God is the Lord is in a desirable position of delight and protection.

May future generations of Americans commit to living for the Lord so that as a collective nation we are in a position to receive the blessings of God. Starting this Independence Day, may we as Americans follow the Lord once more and return as a nation to obeying His Word.

LET US PRAY…

Father, we praise You for our great nation, and we thank You for the tremendous blessings that You have poured out on us for 250 years. Lord, we pray that the generations to come will truly follow You so that we may be defined as “One Nation Under God.” Father, thank You for the immense blessing of being able to live in a free country where we can freely worship and live for You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

The early settlers of America were people who wanted a better life for their families. Because of religious persecution, these settlers packed up their families and headed for the great wilderness of America. Faith was so essential to them that they saw themselves as God’s new Israel heading into the promised land. This was a land where hierarchy no longer reigned. They could cultivate this new Eden and make a better life for their families.

As we approach the 250th year of America on Saturday, lets remember and thank God for these faithful servants who risked their lives to come and build this great nation.
