Finished my first editing pass (just a clean up) and handed off to my editor. I managed to cut 6k words/10 pages without really trying to, which helped! I found that my worst crutch word in this draft was the word ‘back’ - I deleted SO many ‘backs’ from sentences they weren’t needed in! Fellow authors, what crutch words do you use? Video of the cool Boudicca gallery entrance for attention.

One thing nobody tells you about when you become an indie author: the staggering number of spam emails you get from scammers who clearly haven’t read your books trying to steal your money. I’ve had some doozies before, but calling me a CHILDREN’S author is a first. For the record, my books contain spice and mature themes that are not suitable for kids. And I’ve never marketed them as kids’ books.

Had a blast seeing interview at yesterday about her fantastic new novel, The Jump! If you haven’t read it yet, you need to pick up your copy immediately - it’s an amazing story for horse lovers and horse newbies alike!

I may not have the luck of the Irish with me this morning (RIP glasses) but I’m still very proud of my Irish ancestry! The Callahans were an ancient clan that go back into the mists of time. Repeated dispossessions and poor treatment by the colonizers (never forget the Irish were the British Empire’s first victims) meant my great-great-great grandparents were forced to immigrate to America in 1865. How great-great Grandma Margaret married an Ohioan is beyond me. But Erin is the land of the horse, the land of the Gael, and the land of my ancestors. And that’s worth celebrating! Éirinn go Brách! ☘️ ☘️

Can’t let the Ides of March slip past without a playful little reminder of what happens (and should always happen) to tyrants…😈 Also, if I see one more Ides of March post trying to pass off the statue of the deified Caesar Augustus (aka Octavian) as Julius Caesar, I’m gonna scream.

Did you know that wealthy Romans often adorned their tombstones with full body stone portraits of themselves? The sculpture was typically done while the subjects were still living, of course. And they were painted, too! Ancient Romans absolutely loved color. If you take a close look at the left side of this particular stone, you can actually see some of the 2000 year old paint that miraculously hadn’t eroded away! One of the many treasures in the Mainz Landesmuseum

It’s hard posting content when you’re creating. In fact, it’s hard doing ANYTHING. I wrote 22,000 words last week finishing my rough draft and everything - sleep, cleaning, and yes, eating - went out the window. This is one of my “dinners” I fixed myself last week. CORN. Just a bowl of warmed up CORN. The life of an author is glamorous, y’all.

First draft of ROMAN EQUESTRIAN III: TRIUMPHALES is complete - and only 6 days after my self-imposed deadline! Now to put it away to start editing in a few weeks and…oh dear god. What have I done??
