The announcement came as no surprise—but it still carried plenty of meaning for the San Francisco Giants.

When the team officially revealed its Opening Day starter for the 2026 season, the name at the top of the list was the one fans expected to hear.

Logan Webb.

The Giants’ ace will take the mound on March 25 at Oracle Park when San Francisco begins its season against the powerful New York Yankees, marking the fifth consecutive year Webb has been trusted with the responsibility of starting Opening Day.

That milestone now places him ahead of franchise legend Madison Bumgarner and moves him one step closer to the historic record held by Hall of Famer Juan Marichal.

But this year’s assignment may come with an even bigger challenge.

Because Webb’s opponent on baseball’s biggest opening stage will be one of the most dangerous lineups in the sport.

Just days ago, Hayden Birdsong looked like a pitcher reborn.

The San Francisco Giants right-hander had finally delivered a breakout performance during Spring Training, unleashing the hardest pitch of his career and showing signs that he might be turning the page after a difficult 2025 season.

But the excitement didn’t last long.

Soon after that promising outing, Birdsong began feeling forearm discomfort, a warning sign that instantly raised concern inside the Giants clubhouse. The team quickly sent him for medical tests — and the results delivered a crushing blow.

An MRI revealed a Grade 2 UCL sprain, one of the most feared injuries for pitchers.

Now Birdsong is heading for a second medical opinion as the Giants prepare for a difficult decision that could determine whether his season is salvageable… or already over.

Spring Training is supposed to be the moment when players fight for opportunity. For Giants pitcher Hayden Birdsong, it suddenly became a moment filled with uncertainty.

During a recent game against the Cleveland Guardians, the young right-hander felt a sudden discomfort in his arm while delivering a curveball — an issue that immediately raised questions about his health.

Birdsong has since undergone an MRI and is waiting for a second medical opinion to determine the exact cause of the problem. For now, the pitcher remains hopeful that the injury will only keep him off the mound for a few weeks.

Still, for someone trying to secure one of the final bullpen spots on the Giants roster, even a short absence could complicate his path.

And until doctors provide clear answers, both Birdsong and the Giants can only wait.

For two weeks, Drew Gilbert watched from the sidelines.

A shoulder injury kept the speedy Giants outfielder out of the lineup, leaving his chances of making the Opening Day roster suddenly uncertain. But on Tuesday, Gilbert finally returned to the field—and stepped straight back into one of the most intense position battles in San Francisco’s spring camp.

The Giants are searching for answers after last season’s disastrous outfield defense, which ranked dead last in Major League Baseball.

That means every defensive play, every swing, and every sprint across the outfield grass now carries enormous importance.

Gilbert brings speed, versatility, and defensive upside—but several other players are pushing just as hard for the same roster spot.

And with Opening Day approaching fast, the Giants will soon have to make a decision.

When Harrison Bader stepped onto the field wearing Team Israel’s jersey, it meant more than just another baseball game.

For the new San Francisco Giants center fielder, the World Baseball Classic became one of the most emotional moments of his career — representing his heritage and family on an international stage.

But after more than a week away from spring training, Bader felt something pulling him back.

His team.

The veteran outfielder returned to the Giants this week and immediately jumped back into the lineup, hitting leadoff in a spring training game against the Chicago White Sox.

While he called the WBC a “great experience,” Bader admitted that being away from his MLB team felt unusual — and he was eager to reconnect with his teammates.

Now back in San Francisco’s clubhouse, Bader is ready to shift focus to a new challenge.
