Red and Bandit had their vet visit today at Southway Animal Clinic. Jack and Liz will be seen on Thursday. While Red and Bandit were absolute troopers, we did get some news.

Both boys are starting antibiotics for UTI’s and are estimated to be about 8 weeks old now.

During Red’s exam, Dr. Ruff discovered something more concerning. Red has double inguinal hernias. This means surgery next week to repair them so he can grow up healthy and pain free.

We feel like we keep getting surprised with significant medical needs lately, and this sweet boy’s surgery is another unexpected expense. We are asking for help to get Red through this.

‼️URGENT: HORSE AT A LOCAL RESCUE WAS SHOT‼️

Horse & Halo is requesting assistance from anyone who may have information regarding a shooting incident that injured one of our rescue horses, Lulu. 💖

At approximately 11:40 p.m. last Friday(1/30), several gunshots were heard near the rescue. We immediately contacted 911, and deputies with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office responded promptly. At that time, no animals appeared injured.

By the following morning, that was no longer the case. Lulu was not moving normally and had a visible blood pattern on her legs. Our veterinarian examined her and identified a wound approximately 9mm in diameter, with a wound tract measuring 3–4 inches and no exit wound, indicating the bullet most likely remains inside her body.

We will not speculate about motive. Our focus remains on Lulu’s care and ensuring the facts of the incident are established. Updates will be shared as new, verified information becomes available.

🚨What We Know:
A small gray SUV, possibly a Jeep Patriot, was observed passing the rescue seconds after the shots were fired. The vehicle traveled east on Hubbard Road, stopped at the Hubbard and Stewart intersection for nearly a minute, then turned around, passed the rescue again heading west, and continued east toward Eagle Road.

This remains an active investigation, and we appreciate the continued work of the Ada County Sheriff’s Office. To enhance safety, additional security cameras have been installed to protect the horses, volunteers, and property.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Ada County Sheriff’s Office immediately and reference Case # ACS26-001017.
Idaho Animal Rescue Network (IARN) is offering a reward for information that leads to an arrest.

What happened at Horse & Halo is heartbreaking and infuriating. For someone to deliberately shoot at horses at a rescue, injuring one, is calculated, cruel, and cowardly.

It’s hard to believe how far Ruby has come in just one month. Since the day Ruby and Roscoe entered our lives, they have left a mark on our hearts that will never fade. In many ways, we feel like Roscoe’s spirit still shines through in Ruby every single day.

We would be lying if we said the thought of her heading off to a new home soon was easy. It is a little bittersweet. When her adoption day comes, there will definitely be some tears… and a whole lot of happiness too.

The Appaloosa horse is not just an animal to the Nez Perce people.
It is history with a heartbeat.

For generations, the Nez Perce carefully bred these horses for strength, intelligence, endurance, and loyalty. The Appaloosa carried the Nez Perce people across this land, through survival, resistance, and resilience. They were partners in war and peace, in hunting and ceremony, in daily life and sacred tradition. When nearly everything else was taken, the horse remained a living symbol of who the Nez Perce people are and where they come from.

That is why what has come to light is so painful.

For many years, the Nez Perce Horse Program stood as a place meant to honor that legacy, to protect it, teach it to Nez Perce youth, and ensure these horses were treated with the respect they deserve. But in August, a report of a young horse left to suffer and die in the heat of summer, in addition to other deceased horses around the same time, forced a closer look. What began as one heartbreaking concern has since unfolded into something far deeper and far more troubling.

As the trail was followed, more concerns surfaced about the care of the horses, the condition of the facilities, and the true state of a program meant to represent pride and preservation. What was uncovered was not a single mistake or moment of hardship, but patterns that raised serious questions.

Neglected care. Preventable suffering. Horses that should have thrived instead struggled to survive.

Only after Tribal Police, outside professionals, and Washington State University veterinarians became involved did real improvement begin to show. Horses gained weight, received proper medical attention, and showed signs of recovery. That alone speaks volumes.

But weight gain does not erase what came before. And it does not answer the questions that still remain. More recent discoveries have been devastating. Each new piece adds to a growing picture that cannot be ignored. These horses deserve more than quiet fixes behind closed doors.

They deserve honesty.
They deserve accountability.
They deserve dignity.

These horses carry history.
They carry culture.
They carry the spirit of the Nez Perce people.

And the Nez Perce people, along with the donors, grantors, and community members who believed in this program, deserve the full truth about what has happened. Not rumors. Not fragments. The truth.

Behind the scenes, we are working diligently to put together the full story and to ask the hard questions. A detailed timeline is being built, photos and videos are being carefully reviewed, and the reports that have been compiled are being read thoroughly so the most accurate information can be shared.

Because when the horse is failed, the history, culture, and spirit it carries fail as well.
