I just wrapped up listening to BrenƩ Brown's "The Power of Vulnerability" (highly recommend), and one of the guideposts she outlines for whole-hearted living is "letting go of exhaustion as a status symbol and productivity as self-worth." Wow. This was an eye-opener. For me, this translates to giving myself grace instead of beating myself up when I'm not performing or producing at a certain level. It's so hard to do, especially for those of us that are our own worst critics. Yesterday I missed the gym, I wasn't as productive as I wanted to be at work, I cooked a mediocre dinner, and did not get to most of my to-do list before calling it a day. But the reality is, I got some much-needed rest by "sleeping in" a little longer, I had a successful presentation in front of 100+ people, the family was fed, and I cleaned the kitchen and did a load of laundry before bed. It's interesting how my mind immediately went to what I didn't do before I caught myself and switched the perspective. The reality is, we're going to have days that we don't check all the boxes. And that is completely okay. Sometimes rest is more important, and the exhaustion is not worth the productivity.
