🌳 A Common Mulching Mistake That Can Kill Your Tree
One of the most common problems we see in landscape beds is mulch piled up against the trunk of a tree. It might look clean and tidy at first, but this practice—often called a “mulch volcano”—can actually cause serious damage over time.
When mulch is piled against the trunk, it can:
• Trap moisture against the bark
• Cause the trunk to rot
• Attract insects and rodents
• Encourage roots to grow incorrectly (girdling roots)
• Slowly weaken or even kill the tree
The correct way to mulch:
✔ Keep mulch 2–3 inches deep
âś” Leave a small gap around the trunk so the bark can breathe
âś” Spread mulch out in a wide ring, not a tall pile
Healthy mulching helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and improve soil health—but only when it’s done properly.
