The Wildcat Behind Glass was originally published in Greek in 1963; this edition is a fresh new translation by Karen Emmerich, with an approachable and conversational tone that will be appealing to young readers. The book is set in pre-World War II Greece and follows the rise of fascism through the eyes of seven-year-old Melia.

Everything is filtered through childhood innocence, gathered in overheard snippets of whispered conversations between grown-ups. Melia's older sister Myrto is a fan of the new changes at school, including the "youth organization" that she proudly joins... but Melia is unsure, leading to tensions between the sisters that mirror the rising tensions around them. Recommended for grades 3-7.
