Roughly 20% of Americans live with chronic pain, but the health impacts go much deeper.

A study looking at data from nearly 200K Americans over the past 10 years found people living with are much more likely to smoke ci******es or v**e ni****ne, with the highest rates among people with the most severe pain.

"To***co has short-term pain-relieving properties, so a lot of people find it helpful in the moment, but it actually causes negative effects in the long term," said Jessica Powers, the study's co-author and assistant scientist at the Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research and Treatment.

When diagnoses shift but symptoms persist, patients can fall through the cracks. highlights why symptom-level understanding may improve treatment planning.

“This dimensional system was much more predictive of things like whether somebody recovered, their psychiatric impairment, and how severe their mental health condition was even a year later.

"The current system, the DSM, didn’t predict very much, even when we looked at many disorders together,” said Kelsie Forbush, Director of Center for the Advancement of Research on Eating Behaviors.
