A due date is an estimate, not an expiration date.
One of the biggest challenges in maternity care is distinguishing between what we
know and what we assume.
When discussing pregnancy beyond 42 weeks, it's worth asking whether our
recommendations are based on the natural physiology of healthy pregnancies or on
the reality that most pregnancies are medically managed before spontaneous labor has a chance to begin.
Questions like these deserve thoughtful discussion, not fear.
Every family deserves accurate information, informed consent, and the opportunity to
make decisions that reflect their individual circumstances and values.
What questions were you asked, or not asked, when you approached your due date?
I'd love to hear your experience!

The question isn't whether the Odon Assist is better than forceps or vacuum.
The real question is: Why are so many births becoming "assisted" in the first place?
Researchers have described what is known as the cascade of interventions: one
intervention increases the likelihood of another.
A common example:
➡️ Labor induction
➡️ stronger contractions
➡️ epidural for pain relief
➡️ reduced mobility
➡️ slower labor
➡️ oxytocin augmentation
➡️ concerns about the baby's heart rate
➡️ vacuum, forceps, or cesarean.
This isn't just a philosophical idea. Multiple studies have found that interventions during
labor are associated with higher rates of operative birth, particularly for first-time
mothers.
Even the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists acknowledges that, for
low-risk pregnancies, continuous electronic fetal monitoring has not been shown to
improve outcomes such as perinatal death or cerebral palsy, yet it remains widely used
and can contribute to further interventions.
This doesn't mean every intervention is unnecessary. Many are lifesaving when
medically indicated.
But every intervention deserves informed consent, because every intervention also has
potential downstream consequences.
The future of birth isn't just inventing better extraction devices.
It's protecting physiological birth so that fewer women ever need them.
