The Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies recently released its 2026 State of the Nation’s Housing report, and the data resonates strongly in Michigan’s housing landscape.

Across the country and in Michigan, household growth is slowing as populations age and income gaps widen. Throughout the state, both homeowners and renters face challenges, insurance and tax burdens are rising for homeowners, and more than half of renters are now cost burdened, reflecting the same affordability pressures gripping the nation.

Michigan has already shown what’s possible when partners across sectors work together and we've made meaningful progress to expand access to affordable housing opportunities. This report shows that while work still remains, with collaboration, smart investments, and a commitment to ensure everyone has a place to call home, we can continue to build on this momentum.
