On this day in 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981, officially desegregating the U.S. military. The order declared there would be “equality of treatment and opportunity” for all servicemembers, regardless of race. DAV honors the Black veterans whose service, sacrifice and perseverance helped move the nation forward.
