This President’s Day, here’s a fascinating reminder that even our first president had to battle daily pain behind the scenes.

George Washington lived with constant discomfort from his ill-fitting dentures—made from ivory and human and animal teeth (not wood). He managed the pain through frequent visits to his dentist, Dr. John Greenwood, along with regular maintenance and the use of pain relievers like laudanum. Despite the agony, Washington wore the bulky dentures to eat and speak, clenching his jaw to keep them in place and enduring facial swelling and distortion that can be seen in many of his portraits. His perseverance showed remarkable strength and determination, even in the face of daily physical suffering.
