Yesterday was Memorial Day and we remembered our servicemen who have given their lives in war in the service of our country.

Then the Holy Spirit stirred in my heart to remember those missionaries, soldiers of the Cross who laid down their lives out on the foreign fields. They served a King who is far greater than any earthly nation, government or ruler. They are neither remembered nor celebrated by today's church as they should be, but they are God's eternal heroes. For those of my generation, they stand out as shining lights and role models. We studied their lives and wanted to be like them. Their names shall live for evermore.

They number in the thousands, but here are a few names. Let us stop for a moment to think of their lives, of how they walked with God and served Him. These heroes and heroines of the Cross died in foreign fields and never returned home.

Such was their dedication that up until the early 1900s, missionaries would go to the foreign fields carrying their belongings in wooden coffins that they would be buried in, not knowing if they would ever return.

Eric Liddell. 1902 – 1945, (SCOTLAND) GAVE HIS LIFE IN CHINA
William Carey. 1761 – 1834, (ENGLAND) DIED IN INDIA
David Livingstone. 1813 – 1873, (SCOTLAND) DIED IN AFRICA
C. T. Studd. 1860–1931, (ENGLAND) DIED IN THE CONGO
John Geddie. 1815–1872 (CANADA) DIED IN NEW HEBRIDES
Mary Slessor. 1889-1955, (SCOTLAND) DIED IN WEST AFRICA
Sadhu Sundar Singh. 1889-1929, (INDIA) DIED IN INDIA
Philip James "Jim" Elliot 1927–1956, (USA) DIED IN ECUADOR

"Oh Jesus if I die upon a foreign field someday
'Twould be no more than love demands, no less could I repay,
"No greater love hath mortal man than for a friend to die,"
These are the words he gently spoke to me,
"If just a cup of water I place within your hand
Then just a cup of water is all that I demand,"
But if by death to living they can thy glory see,
I'll take my cross and follow close to thee".
