Let' talk about how we can keep bathrooms free from mildew and mold. Mildew and mold can not form and grow without humidity.

1) If you have a leak or even just a faucet that drips, try to repair it right away. If you are a tenant, notify the manager or owner. A constant drip or waterleak can lead to mold or mildew. A dripping faucet may seem insignificant, but it is a source for mildew to grow.

2) Make sure the bathroom is ventilated. Air out the steamy air after you take a bath or a shower. If the bathroom has a window, open it (weather permitting). If it has a vent fan, turn it on and leave it on for at least 2 hours after the bath/shower.

3) Do not leave wet or damp towels in the bathroom. It will keep the bathroom humid for a longer period of time. Keep a hook or towel rack outside the bathroom for the wet towels. If you are a landlord, install a place where your tenants can hang their towels outside the bathroom.

4) Mop up any water puddles that may have formed on the bathroom floor during the shower/bath.

5) Always leave the bathroom door open when no one is using the bathroom. This allows circulation into the bathroom, and the dry air from other parts of the house will help keep the humidity down in the bathroom.

Just remember that mildew and mold can not develop on their own. It takes a humid environment over a sustained period of time. The hints given here are no-cost and low maintenance ways to prevent mold. It is really up to you.
