It’s been 644 days since I last practiced. I know because it was October 22, 2021… our “dating anniversary” and our first appointment with the oncologist. I was holding out hope this was all just a big mistake and we’d be laughed out of the office because of course Nick didn’t have stage four cancer! But he did and you all know the rest of that story.

Yesterday my flute returned to me after some much needed service. I found I had missed it. I actually wanted it back. So today I practiced: Moyse long tones, three octave chromatic scale sprints and an Andersen etude. Took thirty minutes and I am exhausted - physically, emotionally, mentally. But it was the right decision and it is time. I am grateful music is a kind and supportive friend, patiently waiting for me to come back even when I didn’t know if I ever would return.
