Today is the 82nd anniversary of the America and allied troops landing on the beaches of Normandy France. Today we remember and honor those men that served and died on those beaches. My great uncle was one of those men.

Today at 3pm, the Lamesa Veterans Association will be meeting at the Lamesa Memorial Park Cemetery at the Field of Honor to pay tribute, honor and remembrance to those service men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and laid down their lives for the freedoms we love. We would love to ask that you would join us in this somber moment of reflection. Freedom isn’t free. All gave some. Some gave all!!!!

Today, we had an early Memorial Day Ceremony to honor and remember the fallen men and women of our armed forces that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives for the freedoms that we all enjoy. This Memorial Day remember them. We also honored a local hero. Ted Tidwell. The last known WW2 veteran in Dawson County. He served with honor and distinction in WW2 and in Korea. Truly an honor to pay tribute to one of the Greatest Generation. It was also a privilege to meet his family. Not all hero’s wear capes. They wear combat boots.

Huge Shout Out to Tristan and Samantha Kirby with Toys for Tots for this absolutely awesome gift. On a recent trip to Hawaii, they were able to secure an American flag with a letter of authenticity from the USS Arizona Memorial. The flag was flown on Dec 7th of last year on the 84th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We will frame and shadow box the flag for display in our building.

Before I left Mississippi and crossed the river, I stopped off at the Vicksburg Civil War Battleground National Park. This was a very sobering experience. The terrain, the challenges, the ideals being fought for. Friend vs friend, brother vs brother. Very interesting if you are ever that way.

Made the drive over to Tuskegee Alabama. Went to the training facility of the Tuskegee Airmen. Quite a moving experience when you read about what they had to go through just to defend the country they loved.

While in Montgomery Alabama, I went to find the grave of the king of country, and saw these. Rows and rows of unknown confederate civil war soldiers at the Old Oakwood Cemetery. Think what you want, but it does bring a tear to see a soldier’s grave marked unknown. May as well say unclaimed.
Yes I found Hank!
