I spent an hour behind a restaurant counter this week, and honestly it changed how I'm thinking about the whole "AI for small business" pitch.

Not because they're doing anything wrong. They're slammed. The counter had paper cups, order tickets pinned everywhere, a decades-old cash register, and three different tabs open on a laptop in the corner.

That laptop? Spreadsheets. A CRM they were "going to set up properly." A scheduling tool. A separate payment terminal. And probably a fourth thing I couldn't identify.

This is not a business that needs AI.

This is a business that needs its five disconnected tools to become one connected tool. It needs to not type the same customer name into two different systems. It needs the ticket on the counter to talk to the laptop in the corner.

And yeah, once those basics work, AI on top genuinely helps. Auto-categorizing expenses. Flagging a regular who hasn't visited in 60 days. Suggesting the order before the customer finishes saying it.
