With the incoming weather ⛈️ today, we wanted to share a few tips that could help keep you and your family safe.

Even if we don’t see severe weather, this is information every homeowner should know.

🌳 Don’t cut storm-damaged trees unless you truly know what you’re doing.
Uprooted trees, broken tops, and large limbs can be extremely dangerous. We’ve seen some crazy situations over the past few days. Root balls hold an incredible amount of stored energy and can shift or roll without warning, causing serious injury or worse. Often, the sheer weight of the root ball can cause a tree to stand back up, even when there are still thousands of pounds of trunk attached.

⚡ Treat every downed power line as if it’s energized.
Even if a line appears dead, electricity can backfeed into the grid from generators. Stay well away and contact your utility company.

🏠 Know how insurance typically works.
Trees or debris that damage your home, detached garage, shed, or vehicle are often covered because they damaged an insured structure.

Trees or debris that are simply on the ground and not on a covered structure are generally an out-of-pocket expense or have very limited insurance coverage.

If you need to file a claim:

• Every insurance policy is different, so check with your insurance carrier or review your policy if you have questions about your specific coverage.
• As a rule of thumb, emergency work generally does not need approval from your carrier. However, only you can make that decision, and you should never feel pressured into it.
• Hire a reputable, professional company that understands how to handle insurance claims ethically and properly.
• One thing many homeowners don’t realize is that you have a responsibility to mitigate further damage. That means if a tree is on your roof, don’t let it sit there for two weeks waiting on an adjuster. Taking reasonable steps to prevent additional damage is part of the claims process.

📄 Know your insurance coverage.
Take a few minutes to review your declarations page so you know what your policy covers and what your deductible is before you ever need to file a claim.

• Your deductible is your responsibility as the policyholder. Any contractor offering to “waive” or “cover” your deductible should be a major red flag—that can constitute insurance fraud. Don’t do that. 😅

Stay safe today! We hope you don’t need us, but if storm damage does happen, we’re here to help.
