Shop lesson for the week: cylinder rod chrome condition.
That chrome is the sealing surface. If its pitted, scored, flaking, or has a raised burr, it will cut seals, let contamination in, and youll be chasing leaks and comebacks.
Quick checks we use in the shop:
- Fingernail test: if it catches, the seal will catch harder
- Rag test: if it snags, theres a raised edge
- Light angle check: pits and scoring show up fast
If the chrome is flaking or youve got pits in the seal travel area, polishing isnt the fix. That rod needs repaired (rechrome) or replaced.
Got a cylinder that keeps leaking? The rod surface is one of the first things we look at. Give us a call and well help you figure out the right move.
