Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog)

From Udhva Mukha Svanasana/Upward Facing Dog, on an exhale, lift through hips, hug armpits toward each other, outer triceps spiral in, opening collarbone, biceps in line with ears. Lift low belly and lengthen through spine. Send middle fingers forward (if it’s right for your body). Can keep a microbend in your knees. Heels reach toward earth.

This foundational pose stretches hamstrings and strengthens upper back. People with concerns regarding blood pressure or stroke should avoid, practice with caution, or modify it as it increases blood flow to the head. One modification is supporting head with block. It may also help to widen shoulders if there are concerns in that area. Knees can also stay on ground to keep low back neutral.

This is supposedly a resting pose, but I’ve yet to see it 🤣 Nevertheless, it is an important one and I appreciate @andrealynneskane ‘s help working on mine today for this post. She recommended more heart openers and I can’t wait to gift myself that devotion. I super love yin heart openers (like Matsyasana/Supported Fish and Barha Kansana/Supported Butterfly) and I’m grateful for the nudge to give my body more of what it has been asking for ❤️.
