La Cienega Ranch
SOUND ON - Once in a while a defining moment occurs. Today my son and top hand Josiah (16) was out checking water on our range and found a young cow in real trouble. She was in labor and the calf was stuck - positioned so it was impossible for it to be born. Both mama and baby would soon die. The cow was on the fight and Josiah intentionally got her to charge him so he could get a rope on her. Watch this video and you'll see the story unfold. I've never been more proud of my son. Sometimes ignorant people suggest that we as open range ranchers don't care for our cattle. This video should set that notion to rest.

FALL ROUNDUP is over. Three weeks of 14-hour days, short nights, and leg-weary horses, dogs, and young cowboys. It was wonderful, and brutal, and necessary. This lifestyle builds good horses and people.

I learned how to stitch from an old Vietnam Medic years ago, reattaching finger parts that my brother had inadvertently whittled from himself. Since that day I've sewed countless horses, dogs, cows, and people - including myself twice. Sure came in handy tonight when a cow ripped a 17-inch gash in herself. If you're gonna be a rancher, cowboy, or farmer, you better learn to suture.

Cowgirls form an important part of our crew here on La Cienega Ranch, and I've found that the same holds true across much of Arizona's ranching country. These ladies may not be the most visible cowboys, but they are often the most valuable - our ladies work from dawn till dark in the saddle, and still somehow manage to put good, hearty meals on the table when we're hungry. We love 'em, we depend on 'em. And like says, they're "Pretty and Gritty!"
