Why was Key West once one of the richest cities in America?
It wasn’t ci**rs.
It wasn’t tourism.
It was shipwrecks.
In the 1800s, ships sailing through the Florida Reef regularly ran aground on the coral. When they did, local captains known as Key West wreckers raced out to rescue crews and salvage cargo. The business was so profitable that, for a time, Key West became one of the wealthiest cities in the country.
To help prevent wrecks, the government eventually built Sand Key Lighthouse about six miles offshore — a tall iron tower that still stands over the reef today.
It’s one of the most interesting pieces of history sitting just outside Key West.

👯♀️ Bachelorette groups always bring… 👯♀️
A speaker that’s somehow louder than the boat’s.
At least one oversized hat.
Three different sunscreen brands.
A cooler full of drinks.
Someone who immediately becomes the group DJ.
Someone who says “we should totally do this every year.”
And one person who’s in the water before the anchor even hits bottom.
Honestly, it’s part of what makes sandbar days fun.
Aboard Still Dreamin’, there’s plenty of space for the whole crew to spread out, relax, and enjoy the day comfortably — whether you’re headed to Snipes Point, Boca Grande, or wherever the conditions look best that day.

The best beaches in Key West require a boat.
That usually surprises people the first time they visit.
The Keys aren’t built like most of Florida. There aren’t endless stretches of sand along the highway. The best spots are tucked out in the backcountry — shallow sandbars, little islands, and clear-water beaches you can only reach by getting out on the water.
That’s where the day changes.
Quiet water. Soft sand under your feet. No roads. No crowds from downtown. Just open water and enough room to settle in for the afternoon.
A charter aboard Still Dreamin’ lets you explore the side of Key West most visitors never see.

🚤 What’s one thing you wish every boat had? 🚤
Everybody has that one answer.
More shade?
Better seating?
A bathroom?
Easy water access?
Good sound system?
Enough room to actually relax?
It’s funny how the little things can completely change a day on the water.
That’s a big part of why we built the experience aboard Still Dreamin’ the way we did — comfortable, easy, and set up for full days at the sandbar without feeling cramped or worn out halfway through the trip.

Sailors learned a tough lesson around the Florida Keys.
The water might look calm, but just beneath the surface sits the Florida Reef, a long line of coral that has been stopping ships for centuries.
Between heavy shipping traffic, hidden reefs, and the occasional hurricane passing through, the waters around Key West ended up with more than a few shipwreck stories.
In fact, shipwreck salvaging once helped make Key West one of the wealthiest cities in the United States.
