Key West's' very first attraction: The Key West Aquarium 🐟

When the Key West Aquarium opened in 1935, it was the first open-air aquarium in the United States. The concrete used to build the tanks was actually mixed with seawater, since fresh water was hard to come by at the time.

Now, over 90 years later, the aquarium has nearly doubled in size and is still attracting plenty of visitors every year! 😮

Jose “Pepe” Diaz’s journey began in Cuba, where adversity forged his resilience and cooking became his safe place. As a political prisoner for five years, Pepe honed his culinary skills in a camp. After departing from Cuba, Pepe's adventure took him through Spain and eventually to Florida. It was there that he encountered the woman who would become his wife and partner in creating a new life. Together, they pursued a dream infused with Cuban culture, family, hospitality, and freedom.

El Meson De Pepe's Restaurant & Bar became the lasting home of that dream in Key West. The place where guests can taste Cuban recipes, hear the music, see the history, and feel the culture that Pepe helped preserve.
