5 fun facts about the Double-crested Cormorant you’ll spot in the Key West mangroves 🐦🌴
1. They’re built to dive
Unlike most birds, their feathers aren’t fully waterproof, which helps them sink and chase fish underwater like little torpedoes
2. That wing spread pose has a purpose
When you see them posted up with wings out, they’re drying off after a dive, not just showing off
3. They can stay under longer than you think
Cormorants can dive for 30–60 seconds and reach solid depths hunting for fish
4. Double crest, but you might miss it
During breeding season they get two small crests on their head, but they’re subtle and easy to overlook
5. They’re everywhere once you notice them
From mangroves to docks to channel markers, they’re one of the most common water birds in the Florida Keys
