☀️ Medical Matters with Nikki the Nurse – Heat Illness Recap ☀️

Living in the Florida Keys means enjoying the outdoors year-round, but our heat and humidity can quickly turn dangerous if we’re not careful.

Here are the biggest takeaways from today’s show:

🌡️ Heat illness is a spectrum. It can progress from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and, if not recognized early, to heat stroke, a life-threatening medical emergency.

🚨 Know the warning signs of heat stroke:
• Confusion or acting differently
• Slurred speech
• Difficulty walking or loss of coordination
• Seizures or loss of consciousness

If someone develops these symptoms after being in the heat, call 911 immediately and begin cooling them while waiting for emergency responders.

💧 Stay ahead of the heat:
✔️ Drink water throughout the day.
✔️ Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
✔️ Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
✔️ Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (11 AM–4 PM).
✔️ Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.

⚠️ Who is at higher risk?
Older adults, young children, outdoor workers, athletes, people with heart, kidney, or chronic medical conditions, and anyone taking certain medications that affect hydration or temperature regulation.
