Some of our fine gentleman in big fancy mittens told me this at the last Hemingway Gala… very dapper indeed, in their natural habitat.

No Hurricane has ever crossed the equator.

The equator acts as a boundary not only of geography but of physics. Hurricanes depend on the Coriolis effect, a force created by Earth’s rotation that causes storms to spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern. Yet at the equator, this force disappears. Without it, no storm can organize into the powerful rotating system required to form a hurricane. For this reason, no hurricane has ever crossed the equator in recorded history. The phenomenon explains why tropical storms develop in warm waters far enough north or south of zero latitude, but vanish when they approach that line. Satellite records reveal storm paths arcing toward continents yet always avoiding the equatorial zone. It is a striking reminder that human borders are not the only ones that matter. The equator divides hemispheres with an invisible rule enforced by nature itself.

Added fact: While hurricanes avoid the equator, other dangerous weather systems like typhoons and cyclones follow the same principle, none forming or crossing directly on the line of zero latitude.
