Margaret Atwood intended the novel as a warning against the dangers of unchecked power, religious extremism, and the erosion of individual freedoms, highlighting how such regimes can take hold and the importance of resistance.
The book also reflect's Atwood's concern about the potential for the reversal of women's rights and the subjugation of women, inspired by the conservative revival in the West.
