My dad retired after 42 years, and to celebrate, he treated the whole family to a trip to Hawaii. There were six of us flying together, including my younger brother Jake, the perpetual golden child. I’m 31, he’s 27, but you’d think he was still a toddler the way everyone babies him. It’s always been, “Let Jake have it,” or “He’s the baby,” like that excuses everything. As we waited at the gate, a flight attendant approached me quietly and said, “Ma’am, a first-class seat just opened up due to a cancellation. You have the highest status—would you like the upgrade?” Of course, I said yes. Mom goes, “Wait—are you really going to take it?” Then my sister chimes in: “Shouldn’t Jake get it? He’s the youngest.” I replied, “They offered it to me. I fly a lot. I earned it.” Jake sighed dramatically. “You always make things about yourself.” Mom added, “Just do the right thing. Let Jake have it.” So I asked him, “Would you have given it to me if the roles were reversed?” Jake laughed, “Absolutely not.” I turned to Mom: “And you?” She said, “No. I’d give it to Jake. He needs to be comfortable.” I replied, “But I’m younger than you. Shouldn’t you give it to me then?” Mom: “That’s different.” Exactly. It’s always different when it comes to Jake.
