This wasn’t a celebratory keynote. It was a reminder of what’s still unfinished.

Mehraki Productions got to photograph Angela Rye and a room full of excellence at The Boxyard Seattle | Victory Hall & The Yard, Hatback Bar & Grille, and Steelheads Alley as they hosted the Loren Miller Bar Association 58th Annual Philip L. Burton Memorial Scholarship Dinner under the theme “Celebrating Brilliance in Black.”

Angela Rye’s keynote traced a clear line through urgency and responsibility: the need for strong legal advocates across courts, firms, corporations, and government to protect marginalized communities. She returned repeatedly to voting rights, framing them as a live pressure point in the defense of democratic institutions, not a settled chapter.

She also underscored the obligation to invest in the next generation of diverse attorneys, grounding it in her own path shaped by scholarship support.

She’s no Seattle snowflake, and her resume is far too extensive to list here. Suffice it to say, the evening functioned less as ceremony and more as a reminder: systems only hold when people actively work to hold them.

One standout moment that still moves me from this weekend’s 58th Annual Philip L. Burton Memorial Scholarship Dinner hosted by the Loren Miller Bar Association was hearing the students from With Purpose (SWP) take the stage.

Young people speaking clearly, confidently, with something real to say...and the room was listening. They addressed topics from modest dress discrimination, su***de, and the impact of human connection to the power of knowing from whence you come and the strength that understanding can lend to our pursuit of the future.

You could see the work behind it too. Not just performance training, but mentorship, discipline, and belief. Credit to Toyia Taylor and the entire Speak With Purpose team for creating space for these students to develop that kind of presence, and clarity, this early. 💐
