The recruit firefighters completed Week 17 of Recruit Academy 22. During the week, the recruits took their Unit 2 test, attended lectures on chest injuries, genitourinary, abdominal, and orthopedic injuries, introduction to medicine, cardiac emergencies, respiratory emergencies, and allergy & anaphylaxis emergencies. They completed hands-on training on primary and secondary patient examinations for trauma and medical emergencies, wound care, and obtaining patient history. They also attended a demonstration of how the heart and lungs work and how traumatic injuries to the lungs can be life-threatening.

In Week 18, the recruits will have a full week. They will take their Unit 3 test, attend lectures on neurologic emergencies, gastro/urologic emergencies, endocrine emergencies, infectious disease, and major hemorrhage control. They will also complete hands-on training treating patients who are suffering medical emergencies or traumatic injuries.
