Every year, communities nationwide come together for 🧡, a weekend dedicated to honoring the lives of people in the United States affected by gun violence and elevating advocates across the country who are demanding an end to gun violence by taking action.

People wear orange for gun violence awareness because it is the color hunters wear in the woods to alert others of their presence, symbolizing safety, the value of human life, and the clear declaration of "don't shoot." The history and meaning behind the Wear Orange campaign involve several key elements...

🧡 The movement was inspired by a tragedy in Chicago. In January 2013, 15-year-old high school student Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Barack Obama’s second inaugural parade. Just one week later, she was shot and killed on a playground in her community. Following her tragic death, Hadiya's friends and classmates chose to wear orange to commemorate her life and demand an end to gun violence.

From hundreds of local gatherings to city proclamations, is a highly visible, nonpartisan show of support for public safety that’s powered by constituents in every corner of the country.

This year, National Gun Violence Awareness Day will be Friday, June 5, marking the start of Wear Orange Weekend, June 6-7. We’d love for you to join us in coming together to honor the lives lost and rally around action to end preventable gun violence. Find an event near you: https://wearorange.org/

I honor the lives of people impacted by gun violence and I remain committed to ending gun violence in Georgia.
