This photo was shared with us by Robert Churchfield, taken during his time stationed at NAS Barbers Point in 1967-68. He had horse experience and was lucky enough to be assigned to the base stables.

Robert was one of four people who worked the stables, caring for about 15 stable horses, a similar number of boarded horses, and a dog named Snafu. They did it all: daily care, boarding, trail rides, and even half- and full-day rides into the mountains with packed lunches. Horses were occasionally traded with Kaneohe Marine Corps Base, and riding lessons were also offered. Robert even met his wife on one of those trail rides; her father was stationed at Hickam.

This photo has its own story—it’s the only picture Robert has from that time. A friend who boarded her horse at the stables—Starr Farwell, whose father was the commanding officer at NAS Barbers Point—sent it to him nearly 40 years later after tracking him down. Another photo of Starr from that era has been posted on our page before (extra points if you can find it)! The smiling horse is Rosie, who clearly had a big personality to match that grin. The photo was taken in front of the barn and bunkhouse, where one of the stable hands would stay in overnight while on dutys.

One photo, a lifetime of memories, and a special piece of Barbers Point Stables history.
