Don't Go to Sleep Monday, October 13, 2025

1 Thessalonians 5:1-4
Now as to the periods and times, brothers and sisters, you have no need of anything to be written to you. 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord is coming just like a thief in the night. 3 While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction will come upon them like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, so that the day would overtake you like a thief;

In May of 2010, a Lhuiller Corporation plant in the Philippines was hit by thieves. Five armed men broke in and stole more than $300,000 in cash that was meant to pay the company's workers. The company was noted for their security, so it was a surprise that they had been robbed. Then the two security guards on duty that night admitted that they had been sleeping when the robbers arrived. The thieves took their guns before waking them, then tied them up. Police officials pointed out that the guards had violated the code of conduct that said they should “at all times keep themselves alert during their tour of duty.”

No one knows when Jesus will return, although we know that He certainly will, for we have His promise that He is coming back: “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3). Our responsibility as God's children is to always be alert and ready for that moment rather than trying to figure out exactly when that moment will be. We should not be surprised or taken off guard is the Lord returned today. We should be living in such a way that we will not be ashamed or embarrassed if He appears suddenly. The knowledge that the Lord is coming back is one of the primary motivations for us to live pure and holy lives. “And every man that hath this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:3).

Today's Growth Principle
Every day we should be living as if this will be the day that Jesus returns.

Influence Spreads Saturday, September 27, 2025

1 Timothy 4:12-15
Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. Until I come, give your attention to the public reading, to exhortation, and teaching. Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was granted to you through words of prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.

In September 2025, the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter in Billings, Montana, had to be evacuated when a dense cloud of smoke filled the building. Fourteen workers were sent to the hospital for observation, and seventy-five dogs and cats had to be relocated to temporary shelters. The smoke came from the incinerator, where authorities were attempting to destroy two pounds of illegal drugs confiscated during a raid. The shelter normally uses the unit to dispose of animal remains, but when a blower fan failed, the smoke backed up into the building and quickly spread through the vents. What seemed like a routine task ended up impacting dozens of people and animals, even though none of them had any part in the original problem.

Influence works the same way. Like smoke moving silently through a building, it may not be visible at first, but it always spreads and always affects others. Whether for good or bad, our words and actions carry farther than we imagine.

Sometimes we grow discouraged, thinking our lives don’t make much difference. Other times we grow careless, believing the devil’s lie that no one is paying attention. But every day we are influencing those around us. This is why Paul told Timothy to be an example “in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” God does not call us to impress others but to impact them for good. Even when we do not see immediate results, our consistent testimony leaves an imprint on the hearts of those around us.

Today's Growth Principle
Our words and actions often have a far greater impact on others than we expect.
