Hāwa’e - a sea urchin often thought to lack substance. Yet, the Hāwa’e Maoli (Collector Sea Urchin), native to Hawai’i, plays a crucial role in maintaining our reefs in Kāne’ohe Bay by controlling invasive algal growth. In an effort to study their fertilization rates and how they might differ at varying levels of nutrients/salinity, our team is hard at work studying these fascinating organisms!!!!!!!!

Over the past 5 weeks, our students have worked hard to strengthen their science literacy and communication skills — all building up to our end-of-summer hōʻike! 🎉
Over the next 6 days, we’ll be spotlighting each group and the incredible work they’ve done.
As part of their training in science communication, each group wrote their own caption — because knowing how to share your science is just as important as doing it! 🧠💬
Stay tuned and celebrate their journey with us! 🌊🔬✨
