Neglect/lack of maintenance kills decks. Composite decks with metal railings are popular due to the decreased need for maintenance (again decreased, not eliminated) but for those who prefer the natural wood look and feel, or perhaps the more cost effective material better suits their budget; well, better plan for regular maintenance. Good practices would include: recoat it every 3-5 years, or every 1-2 if it’s exposed to intense sun. Shoveling it during the winter and a gentle wash with the garden hose every once in a while will do wonders for preserving its lifespan. Most importantly, if you’re looking to build, vet your contractors. Most can build a deck that looks nice. Some will build it to last, but few build within manufacturers specifications and warranty their work. If you’re concerned about the state of your deck, give us a call. What a fun project, and it turned out absolutely stunning! This deck is fully picture framed with no butt joints in the field, some sections being parallel and others at a 45 angle. Wanting to avoid the plain old boring square butt joints on the perimeter, we came up with a pointed/arrowhead joint that just takes this finished product to a whole new level. If you ask us, it was worth the extra time and effort.
