Grateful for a great conversation last week with the Real Estate Group at Warner Norcross + Judd in Kalamazoo.

We talked about the journey, the mission behind Bogan Developments, and one of the keys to how a small team executes at a high level — having a legal partner with expertise across a wide range of disciplines. Our relationship with Warner Norcross + Judd LLP gives us the ability to play both offense and defense as we continue to grow and execute projects. That's not something we take for granted.

Big thanks to James Liggins for moderating the conversation, and a special shoutout to Rachel Foster. Appreciate the room and the real dialogue.

More conversations like this. More building.

Zone 32 Phase II just got a major green light.

The Kalamazoo County Government of Commissioners has approved $2 million in 2027 Housing Millage funds for Zone 32 Phase II — a 38-unit affordable housing development in Kalamazoo's Northside Neighborhood.

With studios, one-bedroom units, and two-bedroom/two-bathroom apartments planned for a reclaimed brownfield site at Pitcher and Myrtle Streets, we're on track to break ground this summer.

A huge thank you to Housing Director Mary Balkema, Deputy Director Willa DiTaranto, and the Kalamazoo County Commissioners for their continued support of this community and this vision. None of this happens without people who are willing to invest in neighborhoods and the families who call them home.

This is what it looks like when a community invests in itself. More updates to come.

“Just because you can build doesn’t mean you should.”

That idea shapes how we approach development—especially here in West Michigan.

It’s about making sure what gets built actually fits the community and supports long-term growth.

Today is a day to remember.

Not just to post—but to actually pause and honor those who gave their lives in service to this country.

We're grateful for the freedom to build, to invest in our communities, and to do work that matters.

That freedom has a cost. Today we acknowledge who paid it.

Thank you.

A lot of people think once you find the right piece of land, the next step is to start designing.

It’s not that simple.

There’s a point in the process where you’ve confirmed the site works—but you still have to figure out what should actually go there.

That means stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.

What does the community need?
What kind of housing makes sense here?
How does everything fit within the space available?

Those are the decisions that shape the project long before anything is built.

West Michigan continues to grow—and with that growth comes opportunity.

Across the region, we’re seeing new jobs, new investment, and more activity in our communities. But alongside that, there’s also a clear need for housing and neighborhood development.

For us, that’s where the work begins—understanding how to bring those pieces together in a way that makes sense long-term.

We shared more about why we’re investing in this region in our latest blog. Read more: https://bogandevelopments.com/blog/why-west-michigan

Before and after.

This is a look at Zone 32 and how the neighborhood has changed.

What was once a street without basic infrastructure is now a place that better supports the people who live there.

It’s a reminder that thoughtful investment can make a real difference in a community.

Before a building is designed, there’s a phase most people never see.

Once we know a site can support development, the next step is figuring out what actually belongs there.

How much can be built?
What type of housing is needed?
Will it work for the community—and financially over time?

It’s a process of working through constraints, testing ideas, and making sure everything aligns before design even begins.

We recently shared a closer look at this phase in our Demystifying Development series.

The B on Burdick is moving forward—and projects like this are only possible through strong partnerships.

We want to thank the The City of Kalamazoo, Michigan Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, and Jamie McCarthy, for their leadership and support throughout the approval process.

These tools help make it possible to deliver housing that is not only well-designed, but also accessible to the community over time.

We’re grateful to be part of a process that brings public and private efforts together to create something meaningful.
