Mineral Monday at MGS!

Is that a space rock? Not this piece from Luning, Nevada, but we have found this mineral on Mars!

Jarosite forms as a secondary mineral in oxidizing, highly acidic environments like mine drainage sites. Its widespread presence on Mars is a key indicator of a past presence of water.

Jarosite has been nicknamed the “golden sponge” because of its ability to naturally trap toxic heavy metals in mining waste.
