The guys at AutoZone were surprised to see a boat trailer on a boat trailer.
Life is full of surprises.
I didn’t expect to ever be in this business.
I thought that by now, it would have gotten easier.
I didn’t know that the acronym for FORD that I heard jokes about as a kid was as accurate as it is.
I didn’t expect that, the first time in my life that I used a winch at 34 years old, it would be to load a boat on a trailer on a trailer.
And I didn’t expect that, the next day, I would need to spend everything I earned above and beyond the investment in ramps and a winch to replace a radiator and starter.
Surprisingly, the van finished the job before simply not starting the next morning, and for that I’m grateful.
Life is full of surprises.

Yesterday was my birthday, and a work day. I feel so grateful for that.
I had opportunities to drink the night before, and decided I didn’t want to wake up on my 34th birthday with a hangover or anything other than clarity. I took the day off work at my regular job and spent the night at a friend’s house.
Around 8:30 am, I got a call from my only employee, who is also a friend and former coworker. He was trying to drop off a trailer that we had been hired to transport at the ship yard it was going to, and the Spanish-speaking employees seemed to have no idea whose trailer it was or why he was there with it.
I called our customer in Puerto Rico, who had arranged both the transportation by truck and by ship. It turned out that the Puerto Rico office of the ocean freight company, which was not open, hadn’t relayed information to the Delaware office, which was not answering the customer’s calls. I felt pretty Baller as I worked through the entire situation only in Spanish, except when relaying to Gabriel, and within 20 minutes everything was resolved and the trailer dropped off. 
I spoke with Gabriel again later in the day when he picked up 11 boxes of records from Washington DC, and again after he picked up an enclosed race car trailer from Virginia.
This morning, the day after my birthday, Gabriel dropped off the boxes in Indiana, and about an hour ago he dropped off the trailer in Wisconsin.
Both customers with trailers sent very kind messages commenting on the quality of the service that we provided. One was in Spanish and the other in English, but both said that we did business the way it should be done.

This time six months ago, my business was a disaster on the verge of shutting down.
What changed in six months was refocusing on simplicity and integrity, fulfilling commitments for no other reason than because I had made them, a *lot* of letting go, an increase in repeat customers, a good deal of luck or blessings, the support of friends and family, and one employee who came on board truly intending to be a team player; his willingness to take a risk on my business and my willingness to take a risk on him.
In the past three days, we made three very happy customers, $800 for Gabriel, and $400 that will be reinvested in the business (vehicle maintenance and payments).
I did not put money in my pocket, but I am no longer taking money out of my own pocket to subsidize my business operations. My business is sustaining itself while paying the hired help well, and, soon, should generate a surplus from which I can pay myself. I could pay myself $400 today just for being on the phone a few times on my birthday, but I am making the decision to set revenue aside in my business account to cover unexpected business costs until we reach a significant savings.
I feel very grateful to be able to say this the day after my birthday. I am grateful to have been able to be on the phone with my employee yesterday, being a supportive, helpful, and knowledgeable employer. I believe that that ability results both from a lot of hard work and intention on my own part and a good deal of love, luck, privilege and support that I have received in my life.
I will do my best to keep this energy, build a values driven and honest small business, maintain clarity and enjoy year 34. Thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes. It was a great day!

· No fees and no company cut after monthly quota is reached
· Choose your own routes, loads and schedules
· Get on the road legally and quickly with the company’s operating authority and USDOT number
· 50% of year-end company profits distributed back to drivers
· Actual earnings may vary by driver, and be higher or lower than estimated. This estimate is based on $18,000 gross monthly revenue, a $2,200 monthly quota that covers insurance and operating authority costs, bookkeeping, and other operating expenses, and $5,000 in monthly driver operating expenses. Many hot shot drivers report higher earnings. Those who are starting out with a smaller vehicle and/or trailer, or less time on the road, may report lower total earnings. Please take time to research the industry and understand your own likely earning potential before applying.

Qualifications:

· Your own vehicle. A ¾ ton vehicle or greater is recommended; however, it is possible to start with smaller vehicles in certain markets that Send It! Delivery Co. is able to provide guidance on. Smaller vehicles often come with smaller earning potentials. Semis, including power only, are welcome.
· Your own trailer. A 30 foot or longer gooseneck flatbed trailer is recommended; however, it is possible to start with smaller and/or bumper pull trailers, or none at all. Guidance is provided; however, be aware that in most cases, smaller trailers or vehicles operating without a trailer will have a smaller earning potential.
· Willingness to find your own loads, routes, and schedules. Send It! Delivery Co. offers you a unique opportunity to effectively function as an owner operator without the hassle of obtaining your own operating authority, and with the benefits of shared expenses and less personal liability. Contracted employees are welcome to work with dispatchers of their choosing to book loads, or access load boards provided by the company. This allows contracted employees to choose their own routes and schedules without ever being told where to go or how many hours to work. In exchange, each contracted employee takes responsibility for choosing, booking and completing the loads of their choosing.
· Be willing to understand and abide by all applicable laws and regulations related to the type of vehicle you will drive and authority you will operate under, and be a good representative of Send It! Delivery Co.
· Have a clean driving record and experience driving the type of vehicle(s) you wish to use.
· Be ready to cover your own startup costs:
o Required equipment to be carried in the vehicle (including a fire extinguisher, traffic cones, fuses, and USDOT manuals) as set forth by the USDOT totaling approximately $300.
o A DOT physical examination as required by USDOT regulations (approximately $100-$150)
o A $200 documentation fee to create a driver file (reimbursed after three active months of employment)
