Headwaters Jupiter

It is Thanksgiving Holiday Week. A time to be thankful for ancient scrublands. Visitors to the county's protected scrublands, like Jupiter Ridge Natural Area pictured here, walk atop ancient sand dunes that once brushed the Atlantic Ocean thousands of years ago. It only takes a few steps in the sugar sand to convince hikers they are traversing a long-gone beach. Scrublands are home to prehistoric reptiles (gopher tortoises) and plants that feature medieval-looking weaponry (pricklypear cactus). Now is the time to explore these special places.
