Did you know traditional Cherokee pottery is not made with a spinning wheel? Shown in this 1993 photo, Cherokee National Treasure Anna Mitchell hand-builds pottery using the coiling method. This method is done by rolling clay into a long rope and coiling it upward in layers. Once the pot’s desired shape and height is reached, the potter uses various tools to smooth, define and decorate it. The pottery is then fired.
