Value Yourself Inc. Founders Story 04/28/2025

First, it started as just some coaching that I was going to offer people to help them work through and acknowledge their emotions.

Then we decided that it was much deeper than that, so we really needed to get to the root of Americas growing mental health crisis….

After lots and lots of research, I decided that it probably would be best to focus our attention on our troubled youth.

It’s much easier to help children become responsible adults than to repair emotionally broken ones.

This video just explains my background and what led me to founding Value Yourself Inc. It explains what I do as a coach but this is only the beginning. 🙏🏾

After overcoming my own bouts of suicidal tendencies and participating in over a decade of my own counseling. I figured that I could use that experience to help others grow emotionally, and heal internally . ❤️

Stay Tuned as this is only the beginning….

See the problem is, a lot of y’all don’t want to do the work! You have to DO THE WORK, which includes confronting anything that’s holding you back. The first step is always self awareness and for my folks that just CAN NOT sit with themselves. Ask yourself why you ALWAYS need to be busy? What exactly are you running from? Step 1 is to be present , to be self aware. Step 2 is to FEEL. Shoot me a private message for 1-on-1 coaching sessions. This work is real, it’s tough! Only reach out if you’re truly ready to confront those demons.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System or , PNS is vital when it comes to calming us down, promoting rest and a lower heart rate.

Here are a few techniques that you can utilize to activate your PNS!

- Breathing exercises in general are beneficial for calming the body , reducing our heart rate, and promoting efficient blood regulation.

-Meditation in particular does wonders for promoting awareness and the ability to be present. It can specially help to increase efficiency within the MPFC (Medial Prefrontal Cortex)

-Tight muscles hold on to lots of energy and can make you feel tense.
Yoga and Massages promote blood flow, which in return decreases inflammation. Inflammation has been strongly linked to depression so utilizing these techniques could be beneficial to combating stress.

I tried to get into this book but it was just sooo much information , it was overwhelming. I do agree that it’s a great book though.

When I first picked up Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst by Robert M. Sapolsky, I was prepared for a dense, scientific exploration of human behavior. What I didn’t expect was how profoundly it would shift my understanding of myself and others. Sapolsky’s ability to weave together neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and history into a cohesive narrative is nothing short of masterful. As I turned the pages, I found myself reflecting on my own actions, decisions, and the complex web of influences that shape who we are. Here are seven lessons I took away from this transformative book:

1. Behavior is a product of multiple timeframes.
Sapolsky taught me that every action I take—whether kind or cruel—is the result of a cascade of influences. From the immediate triggers (like stress or hunger) to the evolutionary forces that shaped our species, behavior is layered. I began to see my own reactions not as isolated events but as the culmination of seconds, minutes, years, and even millennia of biology and experience.

2. The brain is deeply interconnected.
I used to think of the brain as having distinct regions controlling specific functions. But Sapolsky showed me how interconnected it truly is. The amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and hormones like cortisol and oxytocin all interact in complex ways. This made me realize how fragile and nuanced our decision-making processes are, and why seemingly small changes in context or biology can lead to vastly different outcomes.

3. Context matters more than we realize.
One of the most humbling lessons was how much our environment and circumstances influence our behavior. I started to see how my own "best" and "worst" moments were often shaped by external factors—stress, sleep, social pressures—rather than some fixed moral core. This made me more compassionate toward myself and others, recognizing that we’re all products of our contexts.

4. We’re not as rational as we think.
Sapolsky’s exploration of the brain’s limitations was eye-opening. I realized how often I’ve convinced myself that my decisions are purely logical, when in reality, they’re deeply influenced by emotions, biases, and subconscious processes. This lesson has made me more skeptical of my own certainty and more open to questioning my assumptions.

5. Empathy is biological, but it’s also a choice.
Learning about the neural basis of empathy was fascinating, but what struck me most was Sapolsky’s emphasis on how we can cultivate it. I began to see empathy not just as a feeling but as a practice—one that requires effort and intention, especially when it doesn’t come naturally.

6. Our worst behaviors often come from fear.
Sapolsky’s analysis of aggression and violence revealed how much of our "worst" behavior stems from fear, insecurity, or a sense of threat. This made me reflect on moments when I’ve acted out of anger or defensiveness and recognize the fear underlying those actions. It’s a reminder to approach conflict with curiosity rather than judgment.

7. We have the capacity for change.
Despite the overwhelming biological and environmental forces that shape us, Sapolsky leaves room for hope. Our brains are plastic, and our behaviors can be rewired. This lesson inspired me to take responsibility for my actions while also believing in the possibility of growth—for myself and for humanity as a whole.

Reading Behave was like holding up a mirror to my own humanity. It didn’t just explain why we do what we do—it challenged me to think deeply about how I can strive to be my best self, even in a world filled with complexity and contradiction. Sapolsky’s work is a reminder that understanding our biology isn’t about excusing our behavior; it’s about empowering ourselves to do better.

5 Reasons Why You Should Sleep, And Sleep Often

When I started reading Matthew Walkers’ “ Why We Sleep”, I was blown away by the amount of education that I received from the book. Also, as a person who was once apart of the “ No Sleep” crew, I know first hand the effects of not getting enough adequate sleep. I got into a total of 3 car accidents while falling asleep driving. It’s nothing cool about it, sleep driving is just as bad, if not worse, than drunk driving. If you’re ever feeling drowsy while driving, please pull over as soon as possible. This one simple action would save your life and others.

EMPTYING MY THOUGHTS...

The thoughts that keep me awake at night…

What keeps you awake at night? I bet you didn’t think that I would spring this question unto you, did you? Many of us believe that our thoughts are just that, thoughts and that’s it. But what if I told you that some thoughts have merit? That some thoughts are true and hold value, they are powerful. Some thoughts are great at giving us direction. Learning how to discern what it is that we are actually thinking about is a powerful gesture. It is the things that we frequently cultivate within our minds, that we’ll find the true meaning of how we really feel. How we truly feel about our lives and those that inhabit it.

So what are some thoughts that keep me up at night?
