Service takes many forms.

A few days before America celebrated its 250th year of independence, JFRD personnel responded to help free an American flag that had become tangled high above a local business.

Using Tower Ladder 21, crews safely freed the flag so it could once again fly as intended.

Thank you Mayor Donna Deegan for helping us commemorate this historic milestone.

Today, the City of Jacksonville officially recognized 140 years of service by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

Mayor Donna Deegan presented a proclamation commemorating the department’s 140th anniversary to Fire Chief Percy Golden II at Fire Station 2, the oldest continuously operating fire station in Jacksonville.

We’re grateful to the City of Jacksonville for recognizing the generations of firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers, and civilian employees whose dedication has shaped this department for the past 140 years.

Here’s to those who came before us, those serving today, and those who will carry the mission forward for generations to come.

140 years ago, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department became official.

On July 15, 1886, Jacksonville announced the first fire chief of the city’s newly created paid fire department. The very next day, firefighters officially began serving the community.

A lot has changed in 140 years. The city has grown. The equipment, training, and emergencies we respond to have evolved. Today, JFRD serves 885 square miles from 71 fire stations.

But the mission hasn’t changed.

For 140 years, generations of JFRD members have answered the call with the same commitment, protecting the people and property of Jacksonville.

We’ve been on the run since 1886, and we’re still responding with the quickness.

Happy 140th Anniversary, JFRD.

The heat drained the color from these photos, but not the work behind them.

Late this afternoon, B-Shift crews stopped a residential structure fire off Beaver Street before it could spread through the home.

Then came the reset.

Hose was rolled, tools were accounted for and apparatus were readied for the next call. Crews worked together to leave the scene safe and restore the neighborhood to normal.

Just because the fire is out doesn’t mean the job is over.
